1Cetățuia

Photo: Țetcu Mircea Rareș (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You climb out of the streets and suddenly understand the city as a whole. This hill fort was built by the Habsburgs between 1715 and 1735, not to defend Cluj for its citizens, but to control Cluj from above.
- Built between 1715 and 1735
- Designed by Giovanni Morando Visconti
2Turnul Pompierilor
Photo: Roamata (Personal Photo), public domain, via Wikimedia Commons You climb a tower with two afterlives. Its lower structure belongs to the old defensive system, but the building later became a fire-watch post, which is how it acquired the name Cluj still uses today.
- Preserves part of the former city fortifications
- Later served as a fire-watch tower
3Palatul Reduta

Photo: Attila Terbócs (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You step to a building where music, sociability, and constitutional drama once met. The Reduta became famous as the place associated with the Transylvanian Diet of 1848, when one of the century's decisive political acts was proclaimed here.
- Associated with the Transylvanian Diet of 1848
- Functioned as an urban assembly and ballroom building
4Obeliscul Carolina

Photo: Cluj Napoca (originally posted to Flickr as Obeliscul Carolina si Biserica franciscana), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You are looking at one of the city's oldest secular monuments. It commemorates the imperial visit of 1817, but the obelisk itself was erected later, in 1831, giving Museum Square a distinctly Habsburg layer over its deeper medieval setting.
- Commemorates the imperial visit of 1817
- Erected in 1831
5Biserica Franciscană

Photo: MOs810 (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You enter the older nucleus of Cluj, where the atmosphere tightens and the medieval street pattern feels closer. The church here was built between 1260 and 1290 on the site of an earlier one destroyed in the Tatar invasion of 1241.
- Built between 1260 and 1290
- It replaced an earlier church destroyed in 1241
6Casa Matia

Photo: Chainwit. (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You stand before one of the oldest secular buildings in Cluj, a modest facade with an outsized biography. Matthias Corvinus was born here on 23 February 1443, and in 1467 he granted tax privileges to the owner family in memory of that connection.
- Built in the 15th century
- Matthias Corvinus was born here on 23 February 1443
7Casa Hintz

Photo: Hergeberge08 (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You are at a building where commerce, medicine, and domestic life overlap. Cluj's first documented pharmacy opened here in 1573, and an eighteenth-century fresco inside still remembers the Mauksch line that ran the business before the Hintz family inherited it.
- Cluj's first documented pharmacy opened here in 1573
- The pharmacy was privatized in 1727
8Piața Unirii

Photo: Istvánka (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You arrive in the city's great outdoor room, where markets, ceremonies, and protests unfold across centuries. Beneath the paving, archaeologists uncovered traces of Roman Napoca, while around you rise St Michael's Church, the Matthias monument, and the Bánffy Palace.
- Historically known as the Great Market of Cluj
- The medieval city center shifted here from today's Museum Square
9Biserica Sfântul Mihail

Photo: Igor Sirbu (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You stand beside the defining church of Cluj, a building that grows slowly from the fourteenth century into the nineteenth. Look up at the tower: it is not medieval, but a Gothic Revival replacement completed in 1862 and rising about 80 metres with its cross.
- Construction began after Cluj became a town in 1316
- An indulgence document for the church survives from 1349
10Monumentul Matia Corvin

Photo: Unuplusunu (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You face the city's most theatrical monument: Matthias Corvinus on horseback, surrounded by his captains and backed by St Michael's Church. It is a proudly historicist composition, unveiled in 1902 after Fadrusz's model had already won the Grand Prix in Paris in 1900.
- Designed by sculptor János Fadrusz
- Work began in 1896
11Palatul Bánffy

Photo: ModestCraftsman (Own work), CC BY: licence and source on Wikimedia Commons You step from the Gothic square into the aristocratic eighteenth century. This palace was built for Governor György Bánffy between 1774 and 1785, and its façade still displays the family arms and mythological sculptures associated with Anton Schuchbauer's workshop.
- Built between 1774 and 1785
- Designed by Johann Eberhard Blaumann
